Boyd Gelder was a 4400. When the promicin-inhibitor scandal was revealed, the 4400's relationship with NTAC, for their level of involvement in the scandal, was permanently damaged. Boyd, along with many others, believed the 4400 needed to change the world to save it from the Catastrophe and they must be protected, so they formed together into the Nova Group, a defensive wing of the 4400 dedicated to eradicating any threat to them or themselves. Boyd was among their best agents, with his ability to appear as anyone he wanted (named "Optical Camouflage") and considered himself and his comrades to be soldiers in the undeclared war against the government.
Following TJ Kim's capture after Shawn Farrell's betrayal of the group, Nova leader Daniel Armand asked for a Nova member to assasinate TJ before she could give up all she knew about the group. Instead of waiting to be chosen, Boyd was proud to volunteer for the mission, and went to NTAC in the form of Tom Baldwin, where after confirming TJ hadn't broken under interrogation, used an assembable gun (which he had snuck into the interrogation room) to shot TJ twice in the head, killing her.
Boyd went outside Baldwin's house, waiting in his car for NTAC to storm the house as his intent was to make it look like Baldwin was the murderer because he was under intense stress with his son in jail and took it out on TJ, whom he despised for her successful attack on NTAC. When Baldwin escaped when confronted by Diana Skouris, Boyd called Armand to confirm his successful mission, and said he would find a way to make Tom look more guilty.
Boyd then tried to kidnap Alana Mareva, but was stopped by Baldwin and chased out of the art shop Alana worked at, but re-took his normal form to escape suspicion. This, however, proved to be a mistake as Baldwin now knew Boyd's real face and his identity from files supplied by Farrell.
Boyd decided to change plans, deciding to kill Baldwin outright after capturing Alana at Baldwins house after getting in disguised as Baldwin. Baldwin was initially content with surrendering himself to Boyd, but Alana distracted him before he could shoot Baldwin by smashing him over the head with a lamp, allowing him to attack Boyd. Alana was able to get the gun off the struggling men, and held both hostage. Alana determined who Boyd really was from blood dripping from the wound she had caused with the lamp, which Boyd couldn't disguise. Resigned to his capture, Boyd retook human form, and as Baldwin arrested him, he warned Alana (who was shocked so young a boy could be a terrorist) that he was soldier and "there are more of us everyday", implying the war with Nova wasn't over.
Boyd remained in NTAC custody awaiting trial, with concentrated promicin-inhibitor pumping through his veins to stop him from using his ability, but couldn't surrender any Nova secrets due to his low-ranking status. Boyd was soon joined in prison by his fellow Nova members, who were all hunted down and arrested after Armand was captured.
When Jordan Collier returned from the dead, he did not perceive the Nova Group as terrorists (unlike Farrell and the other members of the 4400 Center), but instead saw them as soldiers willing to die for a higher cause, making them a powerful tool to be used, and not betrayed (which Collier chastised Farrell for). Collier took command of organization and reformed the group, freeing every member of the group, including Boyd, from NTAC after using new recruit Michael Lawrence to knock out every NTAC agent in the building. While the rest of the group and the 4400's, including Lawrence, were safely hidden by Collier's agents, Boyd went to the 4400 Center at Collier's request, where he told Farrell and Richard Tyler that Nova was no longer a threat to them. This, coupled with Collier persuasive argument, convinced Richard and Shawn to join the group.
Collier's plan to save the world from the Catastrophe involved distributing promicin to the world. To this end, Collier sent Boyd, Richard and new Nova members Kevin Burkhoff and Tess Doerner to steal Haspelcorp's stolen store of promicin, with Boyd taking Dennis Ryland's form to authorize the store's relocation to the security guards.
When Ryland, Isabelle Tyler and the original team of 8 enhanced soldiers led by Major Jeremy Elwood searched for the store, Isabelle interrogated a captured Farrell, gaining the location from his mind and putting him into a coma. While Ryland waited outside, Isabelle, Jeremy and the soldiers went inside and found Collier and the store. Unfortunately, they found out to late it was a trap Collier laid to assasinate Isabelle; having given Farrell false information before his arrest, a fake promicin store for them to find, and Boyd activating a series of bombs hidden in the store and around the warehouse with him inside it. While at Isabelle's mercy, Boyd revealed his true form to them, causing chaos, and activated the bombs, dying with a smile on his face.
- Last Words (to Isabelle): I have a message from Jordan Collier; "It's a brand new world. And there's no place for you in it".
Though Boyd was unsuccessful in killing Isabelle, he was successful in killing Jeremy and the rest of the soldiers, and gave Collier the distraction necessary to begin giving out promicin to the world.
